ANALYSIS OF LOCAL AND REMOTE MAPPERS’ OPEN GEOGRAPHIC DATA CONTRIBUTION TO OIL SPILL DISASTER RESPONSE IN NIGER DELTA REGION, NIGERIA

Abstract. This paper provides a comparative analysis of the contributions Local Volunteer Mappers (LVM, resident in Nigeria) and Remote (RVM, not an organized crowd-sourced disaster response mapping using OpenStreetMap. The study sampled two Government Areas Ogoni land - major oil spill vulnerable area Niger Delta Region. engaged mappers Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (HOT) tasking manager for Tai (Project task 6358, with 596 grids –RVM) Gokana LGA 6359, 706 –LVM), respectively Mapathon battle challenge. result shows that project 6358 was completely mapped validated six months, while 6359 took 28 months. Each 56 RVM spent average 20.77 minutes/grid, generating total 16,416 edits 13,552 building footprints 858km roads. 173 LVM 41.1 minutes/grid to generate 18,367 14,983 foot prints 521km also showed 103 joined but only within months whereas Demographic characteristics both categories 52% were advanced 72% beginner on HOT Tasking Manager. Conclusively, lacuna or differential requires investigation terms geographic context, digital citizenry, economic disposition demographic online volunteer mappers.
